Need help to get started?

Steps to beginning homeschooling will vary depending on who you ask and where you live, but generally, the following steps will help you on your way:

  1. Connect with a homeschooling community: Support during this journey makes all the difference! Find experienced homeschooling families and ask questions about their process, experience, and the pros and cons of homeschooling. Also, if you decide to homeschool, consider joining The Bahamas Homeschool Association. Check our Join The BHA page for more information.
  2. Do Your Research: Learn as much as you can about homeschooling including the methods of homeschooling, curriculum options, and your child’s learning styles. Speak with other homeschooling parents, search the internet, read books, attend a local or international homeschool conference and take a look at the Bahamian syllabi if your student will take national exams. There are many ways to teach your child or children at home and homeschooling allows you to choose the method that is best for your family.
  3. Create a plan and set goals: Your planning should include:

  • The method of homeschooling you will use e.g. classical, traditional, unschooling, eclectic, unit studies etc.
  • How your students will be taught. Will it be parent directed, via online learning with live classes, pre-recorded or written material, with the aid of tutors, independent learning, etc. or using a mix of these approaches?
  • The curriculum you will use, which may be a single curriculum from one provider or a mix of curricula from multiple providers, if you plan to use an eclectic approach. There are many to choose from and this website, which is one of many, provides an overview of some of the curricula available to homeschoolers: www.cathyduffyreviews.com.
  • What your students will learn each year i.e. which subjects will they study and which national or international exams they will take, if any.

Remember that once you have created a plan and set goals, they are not set in stone.  Homeschooling gives you the flexibility to change your teaching methods, the material you use and your schedule if they don’t work for your family.

Know what your government says about homeschooling: visit the Ministry of Education’s website for more information at: https://www.ministryofeducationbahamas.com/copy-of-freedom-of-information (select the “More” tab, then select the ‘Homeschool Unit’ tab).

Tailoring your child’s education to meet their needs, having the flexibility to homeschool anywhere, anytime and at your speed and deepening family relationships are just some of the benefits of homeschooling. However, it is important to do your research before determining if homeschooling is the right decision for your family.
